Today we talked about the student of the month theme, Citizenship. I have been reinforcing it daily and making connections to my own life so they would understand the meaning of being a good Citizen. I recently found a program in Long Beach called "Litter Lizard" and I signed up to do a school clean-up. They sent me bags, gloves, and hand sanitizer for the event and a form to fill out about the event. (If I send it back I will get incentives for the kids that participated!--it is in the mail!) I decided to invite our 5th grade buddies to help with our clean-up and it was quite a success! We collected about 13 bags of trash in 15 minutes and the kids worked together so nicely to clean-up our community here at Whittier. They were all surprised how much trash there was and felt so proud of their work. They kept coming up and saying, "Look how much I have, LOOK!" It was so cute! I think they will all stop and think before they litter again....or stop to pick up trash if they see it on the ground. In fact, two of my students threw trash away on the kinder playground when we went out to recess later....Wizard Wands for Citizens in Room 1!! I was so pleased with the clean-up and think it should something we do monthly as a school, grade level, or class. I think it really teaches the kids the importance of being a good citizen within their community here at Whittier. I will post a picture once Ms. Hankins sends me them!

What a cool idea! Not only were your students being good citizens but they were also learning how to work cooperatively with their big buddies. I like that.
