This was a monthly writing exam we give to the students to see how their writing is progressing. They can write about whatever they want and it is totally independent. NO teacher help is given--they are given as much time as needed and then they read it to us. I may say "go back and check all the things that good writer's do" but I do not tell them where to make corrections or what to write. This child, in particular, had become such an amazing writer. He takes risks, uses new ideas, and LOVES to write. Actually, all my kids love to. I thought this was such a cute writing sample and wanted to share it...his whole family cried about it. I sent a copy home and his mom came up to me this morning (whom I am close with b/c I had another one of their children for k) and she said "Thank You." I said "what for?" She told me this:
My daughter could not walk in her graduation b/c of grades and this made her feel so special. Jovan did not know that she could not walk and we told him it was during school--we did not want him to know. (she began to tear up and cry) I even drove her by to show her what she was missing and it was the hardest thing ever. I was so happy that I sent it home at this point b/c it made his sister's night and she knew that she was still a hero and scholar to her lil' bro. I think this is a good lesson to her about setting a positive role model for her younger siblings. I just told the mom, "school is not for everyone.....as long as she is not into drugs, se-, or gangs (etc)--and she said "OH NO, she is a good kid. She is just not very smart and does not study very hard. I was like that and I never graduated high school....I am doing well now..the best out of my family." I know this family well and know they are kind hearted, hardworking, and do whats best for their kids. I was touched by the whole conversation and glad I was a part of making someone feel good out there. It is days like these I love my job and know I am where I should be.
