Writing Celebration

On the last day of school, March 21st, we had a writing celebration to celebrate our small moment writing. (I forgot to share on my first week off because I was doing major spring cleaning at home/school.)
First of all the celebration was fantastic! Although there were only 5 parents, every child
shared. I give them the right to pass if they choose, and often times my 4 or 5 really shy/lower students do so. Not this day! They all shared! I think it may have been the curtain, microphone and excitement of being authors. Whatever it was, I felt great. I know their writing was not the best or perfect, but they really believe they are authors and more importantly great writers. I want them to love writing so they can become better and take risks....they need to celebrate their work and enjoy the end product.
I feel that I am coming more of a risk taker as a writing teacher, and I know that the books I am reading have helped. (I really want to just go and buy 100's of new books to replace some of the boring Open Court books I have.) I just wish Lucy Caulkin's could be my mentor....maybe we will get to meet her one day. Until then, I will forge forward with my writing curriculum and next up will be Nonfiction Writing....can't wait!
